About the RGB colour model

RGB is the primary colour model used with operating systems. A colour model is the way a computer works with colours. RGB is an additive model, which means that any colour visible on the screen is represented using three groups of numbers. Each colour has a certain value for red, green and blue, from 0 to 255. For example, 0 Red, 0 Green and 0 Blue results in pure black, whereas 255 Red, 255 Green and 255 Blue results in pure white.

How RGB is used with icons
Unlike other images which support multiple colour models, icons only use RGB. (Alpha icons include an additional alpha channel for transparency.

Example
Below is an example of RGB (and RGBA).  The first image as a mask.  This denotes where the background should show through, and what percentage, or transparency level.  The second three are the individual colours.  Notice how the red and green LED indicators show up only in the red and green colours.  Also note the reflection on the CD.
